Where UK travellers should base a private villa holiday — and which neighbourhoods are better visited than slept in.
Marrakech is not one destination but several, and where you stay changes the shape of the holiday. On a villa holiday the calculation is simple: you want privacy, a pool, a garden and a short chauffeured run into the city. Below is how we brief our own guests before we match them to one of our five luxury villas in Marrakech.
Marrakech's palm grove, north-east of the city. Walled villas, mature palms, quiet lanes and space for a proper pool and garden, roughly 20 minutes by car from Jemaa el-Fnaa. This is the classic choice for a private villa holiday: complete privacy at the villa, with the Medina and Gueliz an easy chauffeured hop away.
Best for: Families and groups who want garden, pool and calm.
The road running south towards the Ourika valley and the Atlas foothills. Newer villa estates, wide skies and Atlas views, with quick access to the Agafay desert. Slightly further from the Medina, and worth it if desert dinners and mountain days are on your list.
Best for: Guests planning Agafay and Atlas excursions.
Secure gated estates around Marrakech's golf courses, about 15 minutes from central Marrakech. Modern architecture, manicured grounds, gate security and golf on the doorstep. The Palm sits in exactly this kind of estate.
Best for: Golf trips and guests who value gated security.
The city's smart hotel and restaurant district, next to the Menara gardens and the Palais des Congrès. Walkable restaurants, bars and clubs — the area you will be driven to for dinner and evenings out rather than the area you rent a villa in.
Best for: Dining and nightlife, reached by chauffeur.
The modern town: boulevards, concept stores, galleries, coffee and some of the best contemporary restaurants in the city. Practical, unfussy and central, and where our concierge tends to book lunches between souk mornings and villa afternoons.
Best for: Shopping, galleries and daytime dining.
The walled old city: Jemaa el-Fnaa, the souks, Bahia Palace and riads behind unmarked doors. Extraordinary to spend a day in, harder to live in — cars cannot reach most addresses, and space is tight. We keep guests in a villa outside the walls and arrange guided Medina days instead.
Best for: Sightseeing days with a private guide.
